Very pleasant tasting tea useful for feverish conditions, such as colds and flu, and to help shift chronic catarrh.
Elderflower Tea is most commonly used in fighting the signs of cold and flu but some studies have indicated it as an effective remedy for hayfever. It is also used to aid restful sleep and is often mixed with other herbals such as Blackberry to make a simple refreshing beverage.
A few clinical studies have shown effectiveness of Sambucol, a formulation based on an extract of elder (usually the berry), in the treatment of both adults and children with either type A or B influenza. Sambucol reduced both the severity and duration of flu symptoms in otherwise healthy subjects, but should not be considered a substitute for influenza vaccination in high risk individuals. An in vitro study of Sambucol showed possible effectivness against the H5N1 avian influenza virus.
To use: Place one teaspoon of tea per person into a warmed pot or mug infuser and add hot water. Allow to steep for 5 minutes, or longer if a strong infusion is required, then strain into mugs. A little honey or other natural sweeteners such as stevia leaf can be added if desired.
