Marsh mallow also has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects. It is especially good for soothing the respiratory tract and has been used for centuries as a treatment for bronchitis, colds, coughs and sore throat. The roots contain a spongy material called mucilage that soothes inflamed mucous membranes and is quite effective as easing throat pain. Mucilage also has a long history of use for relieving skin problems such as chapped skin and may also be used to soothe the burning of a bladder infections and to treat wounds.
This herb contains up to 4% betaine, a phyto-oestrogen and emmenagogue. This makes it excellent for treating amenorrhoea as phyto-oestrogens help to normalize oestrogen levels and emmenagogues bring on menstrual flow. Marsh mallow and yarrow tea make a good tonic for such conditions.
Marsh mallow root is also used for diabetes. It is very high in a soluble plant fibre known as pectin. Taking pectin is an effective way to keep blood sugar levels down.
