Red Clover is a useful aid for smoking cessation and cancer prevention. Red clover has an age-old reputation as a cancer preventer. For tumpurs to grow, they need a blood supply, and they send out biochemical signals that coax the body into growing blood vessels right into them, a process called angiogenesis. Several leading cancer researchers have been working on ways to stop these new blood vessels forming, thereby starving tumours. One compund with anti-angiogenic effect is genistein, a constituent of red clover. Red Clover is also of use during the menopause and to help ease menstrual cramps. Red Clover contains 1 to 2.5 per cent isoflavones. In one study, post menopausal women who ingested clover, flaxseed and soya for two weeks had demonstrably higer oestrogen levels, which delcined when they went off the special diet.
