Walnuts have a long history of medicinal use and have been used in folk medicine for a wide range of complaints. They have alterative, anthelmintic, laxative, anti-inflammatory, astringent, depurative and detergent properties.
Walnut leaves may be used for treating a number of skin ailments and inflammations, such as eczema, dermatitis and herpes and to purify the blood. They are used internally the treatment of constipation, chronic coughs, asthma, diarrhoea and dyspepsia. Walnut leaves may also be used for the treatment of sores and ulcers. Indolent ulcers may be cured with sugar, well saturated with a strong decoction of Walnut leaves.
Walnuts also contain a chemical called juglone that is useful for dealing with mite infestations.
Walnuts may be used to treat hypothyroidism. In Turkish folk medicine walnuts are used as remedies for various glandular disorders, including thyroid problems.
Walnuts may help with weight control. They are a rich dietary source of serotonin which helps make us feel full.
Walnut also has a long history of folk use in the treatment of cancer, some extracts from the plant have shown anticancer activity.
